Black on White is a portrait series inspired by Richard Avedon's iconic portraiture centered on Black subjects. Set against a stark white background, each portrait removes visual distractions, allowing expression, gesture, and presence to take precedence. The camera intentionally moves just beyond conventional comfort zones, slightly crossing the line of intrusion to magnify proportions and create an intimate encounter between subject and viewer. Rather than offering quick impressions, the work encourages sustained looking, inviting viewers to delve into the inner worlds of each individual. By isolating each subject from place and circumstance, Black on White asks viewers to engage with Black identity through presence, dignity, and shared humanity.
